Hands on Innovation Hub

The AI Media Lab is a dedicated training and research space established by MCI at its Media Hub in Kampala. Equipped with advanced AI tools and software, the lab aims to equip journalism educators, trainers, and students in Uganda and Kenya with the skills to use AI to identify, verify, and counter disinformation in their reporting.

Our Vision for the AI Media Lab

  • Closing the gap in journalism education: Currently, no journalism programme in Uganda or Kenya integrates AI training with disinformation reporting. MCI is addressing this gap by launching the region’s first AI-powered journalism training programme at the AI Media Lab in 2026.
  • A practical, industry-driven curriculum: Developed in collaboration with international partners CAMECO and EBI, the three-module AI-powered journalism curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning and will be piloted within partner universities to ensure real-world application.
  • Creating lasting regional impact: By training journalism educators, the programme enables AI and disinformation reporting skills to be passed on to future journalists and shared across the African Journalism Education Network (AJEN), expanding its reach throughout the region.
