The Media Challenge Initiative was recognized for its outstanding contribution to media development in Uganda during the 2026 World Press Freedom Day commemorations. The award, presented by the Uganda Media Sector Working Group, highlighted MCI’s impact in training young journalists, particularly in digital content creation and solutions-oriented journalism.
The recognition reflects MCI’s growing influence as a youth-driven nonprofit shaping a forward-looking media ecosystem. Through its journalism fellowship programme, the organization has trained over 200 young professionals, equipping them with practical newsroom experience, mentorship, and industry exposure to navigate an evolving media landscape.
Speaking at the event, Abbas Mpindi emphasized the significance of the award and the shift in audience behavior. “People spend most of their time on their phones… a bigger percentage of people consuming news find it on digital platforms. This means journalists have to move with the times,” he said, noting that mobile phones have become essential tools for both gathering and distributing news.
He added that both experienced and emerging journalists must embrace digital tools to remain relevant. The recognition underscores the role of the Uganda Media Sector Working Group in promoting media development, while reaffirming the importance of innovation, mentorship, and youth-driven initiatives in strengthening Uganda’s media landscape.
