About Media Challenge Initiative (MCI)
Media Challenge Initiative (MCI) is seeking a dynamic and versatile Communications Manager to support the strategic communication needs of our dual NGO–social enterprise model in Kampala. The role is central to amplifying MCI's mission of shaping a humane and healthy media ecosystem through youth-driven storytelling, narrative change, and sustainable media futures.
The Role: Communications Manager
This position focuses on content creation, multi-channel communication, media relations, and visibility efforts. It goes well beyond social media management, requiring strong writing, storytelling, and organizational skills.
Key Responsibilities
1. Content Creation & Storytelling
- Research, write and edit clear, engaging and accurate content including press releases, newsletters, website articles, blog posts, impact reports and donor updates
- Develop human-interest stories and narrative pieces that highlight youth voices, media development work and MCI's impact
- Adapt content for different audiences and formats (digital, print and presentation materials)
2. Digital and Multi-Channel Communications
- Plan and manage the day-to-day social media content calendar and posting across MCI platforms
- Contribute to broader digital communication strategies including email newsletters and website updates
- Support the production of communication materials for campaigns, events and community activations
3. Media Relations & External Visibility
- Draft media pitches, press releases and talking points
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists and media outlets
- Coordinate responses to media inquiries and facilitate interviews when required
4. Event and Campaign Support
- Assist in planning and delivering communication activities for events, workshops, launches and campaigns
- Prepare communication kits, promotional materials, and post-event reports
5. Monitoring, Reporting & Documentation
- Track communication performance metrics (reach, engagement, media mentions) and prepare regular reports
- Maintain an organized archive of communication assets, photos and documents
- Support the development and updating of MCI's brand guidelines and messaging framework
